Abstract

Synthetic Phosphoethanolamine is a chemical substance which was used in cancer treatment research in a laboratory at the University of São Paulo (USP). The substance obtained national repercussion for believing that this was the definitive cure for cancer. The drug was distributed freely by the responsible chemist. Therefore, many people diagnosed with the disease used the substance as a treatment. However, measures were taken against the substance, which was prevented from being distributed for not having been subjected to clinical tests necessary to demonstrate their effectiveness. Based on this episode, the objective of the present study was to carry out a bibliographic survey about the bioethical controversy that involved the substance Phosphoethanolamine and thus contribute to scientific dissemination regarding the need for clinical research for a substance to be proven effective in the treatment of a particular pathogenic process.
